What this tool checks
- Exactly one H1
- Skipped levels, such as an H2 followed directly by an H4
- Empty heading tags
- Headings over 70 characters
- The full heading outline, so you can see the page the way a screen reader or crawler does
Why heading structure matters
Headings are the outline of a page. Search engines use them to understand what each section covers, screen reader users jump between them to navigate, and AI assistants often lift a section under a matching heading to answer a question.
A single H1 that states the page topic, followed by H2s for main sections and H3s beneath them, is the clearest structure. Question-style headings that match how people search are especially easy for AI answers to quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can a page have more than one H1?
HTML allows it and Google says it copes, but one H1 that states the page topic is clearer for users, screen readers and crawlers.
Is skipping heading levels bad for SEO?
It's mainly an accessibility issue: screen reader users rely on levels to understand structure. Keeping levels in order also makes the outline clearer for crawlers.
Should headings include keywords?
Use the words people actually search for where they fit naturally. Write headings that describe the section for a reader first.
