What this tool checks

  • Title tag: present, and between 30 and 60 characters
  • Meta description: present, and between 120 and 160 characters
  • Canonical link tag
  • Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url) and Twitter Card tags
  • Viewport and charset tags, and any meta robots directive

Why title and description length matter

Google shows roughly the first 50–60 characters of a title and 150–160 characters of a description before cutting them off. A truncated title can lose the words that make people click, and a missing description lets Google pick a random snippet from the page.

Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks they don't match the page, so treat these as strong suggestions: describe the page accurately, put the main topic first and make each page's tags unique.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for 30–60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width (about 600px), which is roughly 60 characters for most text.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for 120–160 characters. Shorter descriptions waste space in the results; longer ones get cut off.

Do meta keywords matter?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for ranking since 2009, so this checker doesn't look at it.

What are Open Graph tags for?

Open Graph tags control the title, description and image shown when a page is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and other apps. Twitter/X uses its own Twitter Card tags and falls back to Open Graph.
